Public safety
Whether you’re attending matches, fan events, or exploring the region, a little preparation can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Large events can mean dense crowds and busy public spaces. Stay alert, keep personal items secure and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, move to a safer area and report concerns to event staff or local authorities.
Plan Transportation Ahead of Time
Expect increased traffic, limited parking, and changes to transit schedules during match days and major events. Use official transportation options when available, allow extra travel time, and identify meeting locations in case your group gets separated.
Prepare for Heat and Weather
Summer weather in Kansas City can bring extreme heat, storms, or sudden changes. Drink water frequently, take breaks in shaded or air‑conditioned spaces, wear sunscreen, and check the forecast before heading out. Know where to find cooling locations or shelter if conditions worsen.
Know Emergency Information
Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and procedures at venues and event sites. Save important numbers in your phone, including local emergency services. If you see an emergency or need immediate help, call 911.
Follow Official Guidance
Follow instructions from event staff, public safety officials, and trusted local sources. Stay informed through official event communications and emergency alerts for up‑to‑date information during the tournament.
Look Out for Each Other
Check in on friends, family, and those around you—especially during extreme heat or crowded events. If someone appears unwell, notify event staff or seek medical assistance right away. Remember, if you see something that doesn’t seem quite right, say something. Download the flyer to learn more about recognizing the signs of terrorism-related suspicious activity.

Weather
Kansas City summer weather can change quickly. As the region hosts soccer matches and events, it’s important to be prepared for severe weather so everyone can stay safe while enjoying the festivities.
Stay Informed
Before heading to matches, Fan Fests, or outdoor events, check the weather forecast and monitor trusted local sources. Enable emergency alerts on your phone and follow official event communications for updates on delays, cancellations, or shelter instructions.
Have a Shelter Plan
Know where to take shelter if severe weather occurs. At event venues, identify indoor shelter areas and follow instructions from staff. If you’re outdoors and storms approach, move to a substantial building or designated shelter as soon as possible.
Thunderstorms and Lightning
If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to be dangerous. Seek shelter immediately and remain indoors until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. Avoid open areas, tall objects and metal structures.
Tornado Safety
Although rare, tornadoes can occur in the Kansas City area. If a tornado warning is issued, move to the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows, preferably in an interior room. Follow guidance from officials and venue staff.
Flooding and Heavy Rain
Heavy rain can cause flash flooding, especially in low‑lying areas. Never walk or drive through flooded roadways—turn around, don’t drown. Allow extra travel time and follow posted detours and evacuation routes if needed.
Follow Official Instructions
During any severe weather event, follow directions from emergency responders, event staff and local officials. These instructions are designed to keep everyone safe.
