Events commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001

Saturday, Sept. 11 will mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks1. The day is observed nationally as Patriot Day to honor the memory of those lost during the attacks. The following commemorative events will take place in our region leading up to and on the day of this historic anniversary.

Johnson County Remembers
Olathe, Kan.

The Johnson County government is creating the Johnson County Remembers flag exhibit on the south lawn of the county’s administration building, located at 111 South Cherry Street in Olathe. The memorial display consists of 2,977 American flags and will be dedicated on Thursday, Sept. 9.

9/11 Memorial Lights
Overland Park, Kan.

Beginning at sunset, a solemn light tribute will be shining for this national time of mourning. This mimics the display that is held at ground zero in New York City with two light towers at the Memorial.

9/11 Memorial Service
Overland Park, Kan.

The Overland Park Fire Department will host a solemn service in honor of the 9/11 anniversary at the 9/11 Memorial, available to livestream or view in person.

9/11 Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony
Liberty, Mo.

Community leaders will be on hand to remember and honor lives lost at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Courtyard Plaza.

Special Exhibition
Mid-County Public Library branches, exhibit on display at the Woodneath Library

The 9/11 Museum and Memorial in New York has created a series of 14 posters to commemorate the 20th anniversary. The poster series will be installed at the Woodneath Library Center during the month of September. All branches are commemorating the events of September 11, 2001, with a take-away booklet version of the exhibition.
