Don’t Fry Day: Protect yourself from harmful UV rays

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention designates the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day,” a national initiative to promote sun safety awareness and encourage protective measures against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Understanding the Risks

Overexposure to UV radiation is a leading cause of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States. Melanoma, the most dangerous form, is expected to account for over 100,600 new cases in 2024. UV exposure also contributes to cataracts and other eye damage.

Sun Safety Tips

To protect yourself and your family:

  • Slip on a long-sleeved shirt or other protective clothing.
  • Slop on broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, applying generously 15 minutes before going outside and reapplying every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
  • Slap on a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, ears, and neck.
  • Wrap on sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes.
  • Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Avoid tanning beds and minimize sunbathing.

These steps are especially important for children, as even one blistering sunburn in childhood can nearly double the risk of developing melanoma later in life.

Utilize the UV Index

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides a daily UV Index forecast to help you plan outdoor activities and take appropriate precautions. You can access the UV Index online or through the EPA’s UV Index app, available for both iOS and Android devices.
