Safety Tips from the Heart of America Metro Fire Chiefs Council

Home Heating Equipment

When winter is upon us, the Heart of America Kansas City Metro Fire Chiefs Council would like to remind residents to use extreme caution when utilizing home heating equipment.  Heating equipment, according to the National Fire Protection Association, is the leading cause of home fires during the months of December, January and February.

In 2003, there were more than 41,000 home heating equipment fires reported to Fire Departments within the United States resulting in 329 fire deaths, 1,565 injuries, and $500 million dollars of property damage.  Common causes for home heating equipment fires are:
